The Success Slope: Jennifer Irvine and The Pure Package
Preparing for when things go well
Jennifer Irvine is someone else who literally started her business from her kitchen. Jenny ran out of table space quickly, and had some advice for us about how to cope when your idea runs away with you.
Jennifer’s idea was The Pure Package, which is a bit like a posh meals-on-wheels service. Her company cooks, packs and delivers delicious and healthy food for people who don’t have time to make it themselves. Her clients now range from Michelin-starred chefs to actors locked away preparing for parts. Jennifer launched the business from her home, expecting a modest start and some tough times. But things took off almost immediately, and after only three months she had to move to new premises.
‘The big mistake I made was not realizing how fast the idea would catch on. I started my business in my tiny galley kitchen. I was really careful with money and took it really slowly, but I was surprised and stressed when it really took off. We ended up with a huge waiting list and we couldn’t cope with all the clients. Instead of sending out food I had to apologize and say they would have to wait. But I know that the main thing is to look after people well. I could have taken them all on, but I would not have been able to send them out good food. I still have some of those original customers. It’s about maintaining high levels of quality and keeping your reputation.’
Chalk another one up for starting small …
Planning for a runaway success isn’t conceited – it’s practical.
Don’t cut corners by giving yourself too much to do.
